Linux Adventure: Dilemma

Written by | Tech

It’s getting pretty bored now… I mean… really really bored… blogging and bored… probably not a good combination… πŸ™

As I try to come up with a good CPU, something cross my mind., should I get Intel or AMD?

So here’s what I did, I tried to create a CPU for both (AMD and Intel) budget wise both CPU are within my budget, so the $ factor will not be a problem. Since my main objective is to run Ubuntu Linux, I consulted their web site to know the system requirements, to my surprise, here’s what they told me.. waaaa…

I took a screenshot from their web site.

Recommended minimum requirements
Ubuntu should run reasonably well on a computer with the following minimum hardware specification. However, features such as visual effects may not run smoothly.

* 700 MHz x86 processor
* 384 MB of system memory (RAM)
* 8 GB of disk space
* Graphics card capable of 1024×768 resolution
* Sound card
* A network or Internet connection

Note: All 64-bit (x86-64) PCs should be able to run Ubuntu. Use the 64-bit installation CD for a 64-bit-optimised installation.

This did not provide much help. But if you read the note, that say “All 64-bit (x86-64) PCs should be able to run Ubuntu. Use the 64-bit installation CD for a 64-bit-optimised installation. “ that means that any configuration I use will work. hmmm…

If you are more techie than me or if you’re in my shoes, what CPU will you be getting?
Let me list them below:
Provided they all have ROM Combo (CD writer and DVD ROM), Network card, Built-in audio, speaker and monitor, so the only thing that we will be differentiating will be the Processor, System memory, Hard drive, Graphics card.

AMD base CPU
Processor: AMD Athlonβ„’ 64 LE-1600 940 Processor 2.2GHz, 1MB L2 Cache
Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD3650 PCS 512MB/256bit
System memory: 2 GB of DDR2 800MHz
Hard drive: Seagate 250GB SATA 8MB 7200RPM(ST3250310AS) Barracuda Hard Disk Drive

Intel Base CPU
Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 (45nm) 2MB L2 Cache, EM64T, 800MHz 2.50GHz
Graphics card: Inno3D GeForce 8500GT 1GB/128bit
System memory: 2 GB of DDR2 800MHz
Hard drive: Seagate 250GB SATA 8MB 7200RPM(ST3250310AS) Barracuda Hard Disk Drive

So far those are the specs that I prefer. But like what businesses say, Specs are subject to change without prior notice… lols..

    nice nice… I’d go for the AMD base, since its much faster and will work hand in hand with your graphix card.
