Cebu’s world famous Sinulog Festival this year is probably the most high-tech festival event happened in the Philippine history. With combined efforts of the Department of Tourism (DOT), wireless leader Smart Communications Inc. (Smart) and Cebu-based website MyCebu.ph, the festival will make a strong move to promote our local traditions and events in the world wide web.
News reports earlier confirmed that Cebu will offer free wi-fi hot spots in key areas of the province so that both local and foreign tourists could easily share to the world whatever interesting thing they could share about the festival. Since most of the people today has smartphones and other wi-fi and internet enabled phones, it would be hassle-free to tweet or post in the social networking sites the different activities in the Sinulog Festival.
Smart and MyCebu.ph also partnered to deliver information about Cebu’s tourism and heritage sites by phone scan technology installed in different Quick Response (QR) codes located in various Cebu landmarks. With QR code scanning, tourists can just use their phone applications to scan, read the article about the site and eventually share it online.
DOT is capitalizing on social networking such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and FourSquare to help spread word on the country’s tourism sites. This is really a good move to market our country and hopefully, after Sinulog, DOT and Smart can bring this same concept to other festivals in the country.
Smart and MyCebu.ph also launched 2 guidebooks – The Sinulog Guidebook and “A Guide To Cebu 2012” guidebook.
“A Guide To Cebu 2012” guidebook is available for free download at the Cebu airport, Ayala Center Cebu, local hotels and other tourists-frequented locations in Cebu. It will also be sold on Amazon and other online bookstores.
