Global 500: Apple more profitable than Microsoft

Written by | Apple, Microsoft

Fortune magazine just released this years Global 500; a list of coporate biggest earners, gainers and movers. This year’s list is dominated by companies in the energy sector headed by Gazprom (1) of Russia, Exxon Mobil (2) and Chevron (5) of the United States, Royal Dutch Shell (4), BHP Billiton (9) and BP (8) are all from UK. But the bigger story here is that Apple takes the 7th spot overtaking Microsoft who’s on a standstill at the 10th place.

Apple ranking higher than Microsoft is really not that surprising, since Apple posted a $25.9 billion in profits for 2011 while Microsoft posted only $23.1 billion of the same year. Further checking Apple and Microsoft’s earnings for the last quarter of 2011, Apple has a stellar 2011 fourth quarter by posting a quarterly revenue of $28.27 billion and quarterly net profit of $6.62 billion, while Microsoft posted fourth-quarter revenue of $17.37 billion and a net profit of $5.87 billion.

If you look at last year’s Global 500 lists, Microsoft was at the same spot while Apple was at 20th place. Both Apple and Microsoft are the only Tech company to be included in the top 10 companies of this year’s most profitable companies, the next Tech Company in the list is IBM which is at number 24.
