Google Chrome the top browser in the Philippines; takes over IE Globally

Written by | Careers, Internet

Last week at Google I/O, Google announced the iOS version of Google Chrome browser that brings the features of its desktop browser to iOS. With the attention that the Google Chrome for iOS is getting, what we didn’t know is that the desktop version of Google Chrome browser is the most used browser in the Philippines and by a very wide margin.

According to StatCounter from January 2012 to June 2012; 58% of web surfer in the Philippines uses the desktop version of Google Chrome and on distant 2nd is Mozilla Firefox capturing 28%, then IE at 8% is still at 3rd and taking the 4th and 5th spot are Apple’s Safari (3%) and Opera (0.69%) respectively.

Google Chrome browser peaked to almost 60% last April up from 56% at the start of the year, then slightly went down on May and June. It’s unclear as to what contributed to the rise and (slight) fall of Google Chrome, since the only news about Google in April was when they announced their new cloud service, the availability of beta version of Google Chrome in the Philippines and their unveiling of the Google Project Glass. I guess those Google Chrome ads that we keep seeing are the one responsible.

If in the Philippines Google Chrome market share is over whelming, globally it’s a different story, since Google Chrome only leads by a very slim margin; Chrome has 32.76% and IE is at 32.31%. Google Chrome took the lead from IE last May where Chrome took 32.43% of the worldwide market compared to 32.12% for IE and 25.55% for Firefox those numbers are based on the data from over 15 billion page views.

To further check if Chrome is indeed eating IE’s market share away, I went to Google Analytic and pulled out the browser usage data from January to June 2012 Google Analytics and here’s what I got (See screenshot below). 40.53% of people who visited the site are using, Chrome, on distant 2nd is Firefox at 27.43%, for the 3rd and 4th spot are Safari (12.32%) and Internet Explorer (10.35%) respectively and to complete the top 5 would be Android Browser which if I’m not mistaken is the built-in chrome browser on Android Mobile OS. These data are from 20,000 unique visits which is just a fraction to the data used by StatCounter but both stats are saying the same thing, Chrome is the leading browser in terms of marketshare.

We still have the next 6 months to know who will the most used browser worldwide and in the Philippines for the year 2012, since everything may change once Microsoft released a barrage of products that they’ve announced last month.
