It looks like 5 more Google product will be axed this coming months as Google continue to streamline it’s services and remove Google Products that are either replaced by new Google services or companies that Google acquired. In total Google already discontinued, merge or move more than 30 products.
Google Mini, Google Talk Chatback, Google Video, iGoogle and Symbian Search App are the Google products/services that will be discontinued, Google’s reason? They are either no longer needed or Google already has a replacement for them, which is true considering how much the mobile and internet landscape have changed these past few years, specially with the introduction of iPad, mobile apps and rise of Android.
Most of these soon to be discontinued services already have their replacement or somehow was replaced by new Google products, like Google Talk Chatback will be replaced by Meebo which was acquired by Google last month, iGoogle was somehow replaced by Google+, since it’s more personalize and real-time information sharing. Symbian Search App, admit it Symbian is a dying OS and that alone is reason to retire the app. Google Mini will be replaced by Google Search Appliance, Google Site Search and Google Commerce Search.
In the case of Google Video, Google already have the leader in online video,Youtube, so it’s just a matter of “WHEN” Google video be discontinued or just combined with Youtube, it looks like it’s the later and Google will migrate all Google Video content to Youtube. So if you’ve have a number of videos uploaded to Google Video you have until Aug 20 to migrate, delete or download their content or it will automatically be moved to Youtube as a private video that you can access via the Youtube Video manager. More on that here.
Now we wait for the next batch of Google products/services that will be discontinued, Can you guess as to when Google will discontinue Google+? 🙂
