Globe Telecom now offering nano-SIM via Globe Store

It looks like Globe is gearing up for the coming announcement of next-generation iPhone or what the media is calling “iPhone 5”.

The new nano-SIM is said to be 40% smaller than the current micro-SIM but still offer the same functionality as all current SIM cards. The new nano-SIM will have a dimension of 12.3 mm x 8.8 mm x 0.67 mm and it’s backward-compatible with existing SIM cards, so expect to see people selling SIM adapter or even SIM cutter to cut-down any SIM to the size of a nano-SIM.

Last June 2012, Smart Card Platform Technical Committee of the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) awarded the standard for a smaller SIM card or “nano-SIM” to Apple who designed the specs used to manufacture the nano-SIM, beating out industry veterans Nokia, Research In Motion (RIM) and Google-owned Motorola Mobility.

With Globe already offering nano-SIM, this may indicate that the new iPhone may be available in the Philippines at a much earlier date, probably sooner that we all expect it to be.
