SMART to Offer Free or Discounted Facebook Messaging Data Access

SMART Communications will soon offer free or discounted data access to Facebook Messaging after the social networking giant announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain its partnership with 18 operators in 14 countries the promotion of its messaging app which is now optimized for chat.

Facebook said the promotion will become available in the coming months on Messenger for iOS, Messenger for Android and many other versions of the mobile app on various devices.

The 18 operators around the world taking part on the deal include:


  • Airtel and Reliance (India)
  • Indosat, Smartfren, AXIS and XL Axiata (Indonesia)
  • SMART (Philippines)
  • DiGi (Malaysia)
  • DTAC (Thailand)


  • TMN (Portugal)
  • Three (Ireland)
  • Vivacom (Bulgaria)
  • Backcell (Azerbaydzhan)
  • Tre (Italy)

Middle East and Africa

  • Viva (Bahrain)
  • STC (Saudi Arabia)
  • Etisalat (Egypt)

Latin America

  • Oi (Brazil)

As the biggest mobile operator in the country, SMART Communications has also expressed excitement about this venture with Facebook. In a statement the company said offering Facebook Messaging is important as it is one of the company’s goals to bring to Filipinos the latest messaging and mobile internet services.

Orlando B. Vea of Chief Wireless Advisor of SMART Communications said

“We’re excited with this partnership as it’s in line with our goal of making access to messaging and other mobile Internet services accessible to more Filipinos. We’re sure that this is something that our subscribers are looking forward to.”

Facebook is currently the most popular social networking site in the Philippines.

Facebook Messenger is a mobile app that allow users to send messages instantly. It offers wide range of communication features aside from sending free text messages including sending photos and voice messages, group conversation, push notification and more.

Facebook said three(3) out of four(4) Facebook users send messages on the platform each month making messaging one of the most important and popular activity in the social network.
