Nikon recently announced that they’ll be opening a manufacturing plan in Laos or officially called Lao People’s Democratic Republic. Nikon said that the expansion is to “reinforce its digital SLR camera manufacturing organization and reduce costs”.
Nikon will spend an approx $6.3 million to build the plan and expects to create jobs to 800 Lao. The 10,000 square meters factory is scheduled to be operational on October 2013 and will be responsible in the production of Entry-level and mid-class digital SLR cameras, as well as some interchangeable lenses components before they are completed at Nikon (Thailand) Co., Ltd. in the Ayutthaya province of Thailand.
Nikon did not mention if this was related to the flooding of it’s facilities in Thailand but reading between the lines the Laos Facility can also take-up the manufacturing duties of their Thailand plant in case the flooding happens again.
