Written by | Careers, Entertainment, Philippines, Social Media

Miss Philippines Maxine Medina is getting a lot of criticism and bashing regarding the way she answered the question and answer portion of the 65th Miss Universe pageant. But Julius Ceasar Medes may have defended her from criticism and basher two days in advance with his post.

He said;

I have so much respect for this girl. She doesn’t deserve these nonsense issues. The problem with us, Filipinos, we always think that without the English language, we’re all hopeless. Sad to say, but this is a reflection of a deep-rooted colonial mentality that we have in our country.

He later points out that knowing how to speak English is not a sign of intelligence and power, he even cited a country does not need to speak English in order to be considered as a 1st world country.

I have so much respect for this girl. She doesn’t deserve these nonsense issues. The problem with us, Filipinos, we always think that without the English language, we’re all hopeless. Sad to say, but this is a reflection of a deep-rooted colonial mentality that we have in our country.

Culture wise, talong talo tayo ng Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. These countries have strong culture and an undeniably love for their language. Us, Filipinos, we’re comfortable with “TagLish”. Yuck right?! There’s a lot of Filipinos who may not be able to piece a sentence together in their own language. I, myself am guilty of this.

Countries like Japan, France, China, Russia and United Arab Emirates don’t use English but they’re all first world countries. The point is, we don’t have to speak English just to justify our intelligence and power. English is just a language like Spanish, Arabic and Filipino.

When will this colonial mentality end? I wish that we could all learn and change. Maxine Medina has all the right to use her mother tongue when and if she wishes to do so. She’s representing us. She is PHILIPPINES. So before you bash or pull her down, remember that you’re bashing Philippines and not Maxine.
