Chinese phone manufacturer, Huawei is going to announce their next flagship smartphone, the Mate 10, dub as ‘The Real AI Phone’ on October 16, 2017.
The Chinese Tech giant is also expected to provide more details and perhaps a demo of their recently announced Kirin 970 chipset built with its own neural processing unit, which is why their claim of ‘The Real AI Phone’ may hold some water.
In an article on ZDNet describes Kirin 970 as;
The Kirin 970 mobile AI computing platform is powered by an 8-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, which Huawei said delivers 25x greater performance and 50x greater efficiency compared to a quad-core Cortex-A73 CPU cluster.
Huawei (together with Apple) are the ‘only’ phone manufacturer to have design and develop their own chipset with dedicated “Neural Processing Unit” or NPU, which is why Huawei is infatuated with Apple’s recently announced iPhone X with its A11 Bionic chip with neural engine, since there’s no other company they can compare their Kirin 970 mobile with.
Huawei’s ‘infatuation’ with Apple clearly shows in the marketing material that they’ve release on their Facebook page (above) as well as the official twitter account for Huawei Mobile (below).

At this point, even after Apple announce the iPhone X to the world, we simply do not know what are the benefits of having a dedicated NPU in your smartphone’s processor or if its even needed. We’ll probably know what Huawei’s take on the issue when they show off their new tech and device on October 16.
