Tesla working with AMD to develop its own own self-driving AI chip

Tesla, the electric car manufacturer is working with AMD to develop its own AI chips to handle its self-driving system.

The car manufacturer already have an existing partnership with Nvidia, that powers Tesla’s Autopilot system, however its partnership with AMD to develop its own chip could push Tesla to become a vertically integrated company, like Apple and reduce its reliance on third-party AI processing hardware.

In a report by CNBC, Tesla apparently have received the first batch of processor prototype for that the company can use for testing. Creating their own chip specific for autonomous driver will help Tesla to have more control over key aspect of its supply chain, be able to increase overall system efficiency and performance.

Tesla claimed that the current generations of vehicle have the hardware and computing ability to be full self-driving with a software update in the future.
