Things to do before upgrading to iOS 11

Today, Apple will release the iOS 11 for all idevices, however before go ahead and download the latest version iOS, there are a few things that you need to do.

1. Check if your device is compatible.

No matter what your device is, it always best to check if its compatible to the latest version of iOS. Since your device will not even attempt to download the iOS 11 if its not compatible, if you force it to update to the latest version, that is if you can force it. It’ll do more harm than good to your idevice.

Last week Apple Support did provide a comprehensive list of what iDevice is comptible with iOS 11. In a nutshell, if you are using an iPhone 5s or an iPad Air or later model, you should be fine, and if you are using iPod Touch 6th Generation you should be able to upgrade to iOS 11.

2. Backup your device

No matter what device you are using, it best that you backup your device before upgrading to a major version of iOS.

3. Check for App Compatibility

Just like with #1, you will need to check if apps that you are frequently using is compatible with iOS 11, because if the app is not compatible you may need to revert your iOS 11 back to the older version in order for the app to work again. This step is important specially if the incompatible app is an app that you use for work or something important, like Slack, Twitter or Paypal.

Fortunately, if the app that you are using was developed by a large company say Microsoft or Adobe, chances are an update is already available or at least currently in development.

To check for App Compatibility, here what you need to do;
1. Go to Settings > General then About tab.
2. Click Applications and from there you should see a list of apps that might not yet be compatible with the latest iOS version.

If everything looks good for you, then you can go ahead and update to iOS 11 by going to Settings > General > Software Update, when prompted just Download and Install iOS 11 on your device.

You can also go to Apple Support for other ways to upgrade to the latest iOS version.
